Natalie's conniving grandmother and sister marry her off to a rural farmer, Rhett. He's a single father, looking after a mute daughter, Ellie. Natalie's presence isn't taken kindly, as she is shunned by Ellie and the woman next door. Over time, she learns the woman next door is actually abusing Ellie. She develops a bond with Ellie, which deepens when Ellie speaks up for the first time to save her. But as Natalie starts settling in, new troubles arise. Ellie is bullied at school, and Natalie gets tangled in conflicts involving both her old and new families. She vows to protect the hard-won love and family she's built.
